Disappointed

| Reviewer: Stephen Scrupps, |
I have had several Sony clock radios in the past and liked them all. This was my latest and when i first got it I thought it looked very smart. However, once I started using it I was disappointed. Rather than give up on it though I thought I would give it a while to get used to it. Now 6 months later I am looking for a new clock radio. The issues:
1) It has 3 brightness settings. Even on the lowest it is quite bright at night - but just about acceptable. The problem then though is that it is not bright enough to see during the day!
2) Too complicated - if you set your alarms and then never touch them again it is OK. However, if you wake up before your alarm goes off and then want to switch it off so that it does not wake your partner, forget it!
3) Lots of buttons on the top - nearly impossible to use when in bed. You end up tilting the clock radio back and forth to try and see what you are doing
4) DAB radio - the wire type arial is not sufficient to get a DAB quality signal (in my area anyway)
But I must admit - it does look nice! |
Spoilt by power supply

| Looks good and does the job but experienced a high-pitched hum eminating from the plug. The lack of previous references to this does make me wonder whether my hearing is just too good or whether this is a faulty unit. |
Does as it says on the box

| Received the delivery prompt and actually before they said it would arrive. Opened the box plugged it in and within minutes it was working perfect. Found it no problem to set up, just followed the instructions. Love the way you can set the sleep timer in increments of 15 minutes, and find the clarity and quality of sound to be very good. |
Not the quality I expect from Sony

| The sound level is too low and reception is not the best. It keeps losing its signal no way to stop this I would not recommend if you are a heavy sleeper. I feel you may not wake up as sound level not high enough. |
best alarm clock radio

I bought this clock radio three years ago as it was the best looking model available - and also because I've always found Sony to be the most reliable and long lasting brand. This radio has proved to be as good as any I have owned, with good tone and no distortion at high or low volume.
I was a little anxious when I read the reviews but I've always assumed that the random alarms mentioned by other reviewers were due to them not reading or following the instruction booklet. My alarm has never gone off unexpectedly. You really do need to read the instructions thoroughly though, as it is quite complicated to use until you get the hang of it.
I like the fact that there are four alarm settings available. This means that I can set it to come on for particular programmes in addition to my normal wake-up call.
Reception is not always good on FM in our area and I keep hoping that manufacturers will produce better aerials (or provide an external socket) so that I do not have to attach my wire to something to get a better signal. |
