Not as good as its predecessor

We bought the original Pure Chronos CD version last year from Comet and it is great, we use it in the bedroom and we have no complaints whatsoever.
So we thought we'd buy the new improved ipod version for the kitchen as my previous radio had just died, unfortunately it isn't a patch on the old one.
The sound quality isn't as good and if you have a 5th generation ipod nano, then the ipod docking adapter isn't compatible, so for this reason we sent it back.
If you don't use the docking adapters then you are at risk of damaging your ipod.
Appearance wise it looks fine, no complaints there, it's just not useful for its intended purpose. |
NOT DAB+ UPGRADABLE

I purchase the radio in July as have been very happy with the Pure Evoke 2S so thought I would buy another Pure radio.
The Good:
1. The radio puts out excellent sound, better than what I was expecting. Good for bedroom or small room.
2. Docks and charges our classic Ipod and Iphone 3GS well.
3. Looks presentable enough.
4. Can dim the display or even have it turn off after a preset time, so good as a clock radio for the bedroom.
5. Romote is small but seams to work OK
The not so good:
1. Cant change radio presets using the remote. Have to press a 'preset' button on the base unit. I find this an engineering oversight as the remote has the skip track buttons for changing tracks when using the IPod/Iphone. Surely these could have been setup to change preset station when on FM/DAB. This does annoy me.
2. Has a decent size power block. I much prefer the figure 8 type power cord the Pure Evoke 2S has with the power adapter built into the unit. But I can see advantages of less interferance with the power block seperate from the unit.
3. A telescopic antenna would be much better than the wire antenna as it is a pain to have to stick this to the wall if you need to have it extended.
The show stopper (for me)
1. The unit is not DAB+ upgradable. At first I did not beleive this is the case as many reviews, pure press releases and even Pure product brochures indicate it is upgradable to DAB+, possible at a charge. But Pure support are adament in telling me that the unit is not DAB+ upgradable as it does not have the hardware inside it to run DAB+. Now as I bought this radio to use in Australia which is DAB+ only I have wasted my money on what is now an expensive FM radio and IPod/Iphone dock. It look as if Pure have changed their strategy on DAB+ as most of their radios were being DAB+ enabled, but now it looks as if newer versions of some of their radios sold in the UK are no longer going to be DAB+ upgradable if you can beleive the Pure technical support team.
Would I recommend the radio - if you don't want a future proofed radio, then yes this is a good unit that sounds good. If you want something that is future proofed if DAB+ is ever turned on in the UK or that you can use in other contries running DAB+ then no I can't recommend it. Especially since Pure do indicate it is DAB+ upgradable in their brochure and their support tell me it can't be upgraded. |
purely love it!

| Bought this as a replacement to a Philips idock radio alarm(faulty, had to go back) and as a present for husbands birthday. When we first plugged it in we could not receive DAB radio so reverted to FM....oh dear through FM the time had a life of its own would skip hours, not wake us up at the appointed time! Total nightmare. Rang up Pure and was just about to return it when I thought lets put it on MY side of the bed and......it worked on DAB! Thrilled, so I am now in charge of Husbands present!! Sound is very good quality, primarily bought it because of idock, its such a clever thing re alarm weekdays and weekend settings brilliant. Far better than the Philips one we had. Highly recommended. |
