A book to be placed behind other books in the shelf
|

| As someone from beyond the UK shores, messrs Mitchell and Webb were unknown entities to me, but the blurb offered superlative praise about them, their show or shows - and the book in question (yes, blurb, you did your shoddy work to perfection). Perhaps a more knowledgeable buyer would know what to expect - I simply went for something lightweight and fun. I certainly got lightweight. This is basically stuff the editors of the MAD magazine would instantly reject, but in hardcover and with a lot of glossy four-colour pictures to liven things up. In a review of Martin Amis's Yellow Dog, Tibor Fischer described reading it on the underground and constantly worrying that strangers would incorrectly assume that he had bought it, and might be perusing it on his own initiative. For similar reasons I have parked my copy of this "effort" on a bottom shelf partly obscured by an armchair. Is the humour passing above my head (me being a furriner and all)? No, infinitely worse: it skits towards me wearing oversized clown's shoes and a big honking badge saying "Are you ready to LAUGH?!" Note to self: get your act together and throw that book - the all-time worst Amazon purchase - in the bin tomorrow. |
Comedy moment

| I read this book in snippets - when I'm waiting for a taxi, the kettle boiling, a return call etc. It's ideal for picking up and down when you have short bursts of free time and giving you a laugh-out-loud moment. A mish-mash of fake adverts, pitches for tv shows, absurd fridge-note dialogues and some decent advice actually, This Mitchell and Webb book is a good comedy injection during a stressful day. |
Funny on every page

Mitchell and Webb always make the effort to write new material for whichever medium they're writing for- a lot of their radio show stuff would only work on radio, many of their TV sketches rely on video gags, and there's stuff in this book that will only ever work in print. Where some comedians might use a book as a chance to re-hash their TV scripts, this is all brand-new stuff- and great stuff too. It doesn't read like a cheap Christmas cash-in book hastily written by ghost writers. Seriously it doesn't. Now that you've said that you're going to think I'm being sarcastic when I'm not. That's the problem with print.
Highlights include, but are certainly not limited to, the recurring series "Mundane Quotes Of The Great" and "Great Flat-Share Note Discourses", adverts for the Mitchell and Webb Allen Key and Mitchell And Webb Polythene, and the incredibly astute little section 'designed to cater for fans of The Mighty Boosh who have been bought this book by mistake'.
Great care and at least one joke has gone into every page and if you're a fan of any other Mitchell and Webb material, and if you enjoy reading things, this book is the perfect combination of the two for you. |

| I bought this for my Daddy for his Christmas and I've not seen him laugh like he does when he reads this book. I highly recommend this. |

| Purchased this as a Christmas present for my son. A very entertaining book that has been passed around the family. |
