Not as good as 'Burn it; lose it' but good fun

After trying 'burn it lose it' I decided to purchase Deanne Berry's original effort. I found this DVD to be a bit of a mixed bag and I was a little disappointed. I'm a real Deanne Berry fan and I really wanted to like this DVD more than I actually do.

I believe this is the Ministry of Sound's first 'Pump it up' fitness DVD and it shows: the studio and presentation appears very low budget. Deanne Berry is her usual cheery self but her cueing isn't that great and she doesn't explain a lot of the moves (this improves on 'Burn it; lose it').

The warm up gives you a flavour of what you can expect later. Some of the moves are quite challenging (i.e. low squats etc) but great fun.

The first dance section requires a bit of co-ordination but becomes easier the more you do it. Great fun but the pace is both slow (in my opinion) and inconsistent (i.e. alternating a regular dance moves section with a slower salsa section). I prefer the pace to be quite consistent in a workout DVD. For me, this section did not raise much of a sweat but the 'High-energy dance' section was an entirely different animal! Great high-paced aerobics and awesome fun. It goes far too quickly (usually a good sign). There is a return to some of the salsa moves at the end of the section: on this occasion, this is not incongruent as the pace is slowing down. The 'piece de resistance' is at the end of this section where you perform some of the 'Call on me' video choreography.

The cool down is about 15 mins but appears to drag on for hours. A cool down is so important to stretch muscles and prevent injury but parts of this seem quite tedious. Maybe that's because the some of the floor stretches don't suit me (I'm not very supple and find touching my toes difficult and frustrating).

There were some other minor niggles: I found the sleazy bloke, with the green shorts, quite off putting. He was hell benting on flirting/pretending to have fun with the woman next to him. However, it is quite funny to see them both miss steps or parts of the routine. Some of the camera angles are really inappropriate: they can cut to the midsection of a dancer's torso when you are trying to follow Deanne's foot work.

This is a good DVD to add to the collection, especially if you love MOS workouts. I would recommend this DVD (hence the four star rating) but I think that Deanne Berry has done better: My favourite is 'Burn it; lose it'.

I bought this 2 weeks ago because it looked fun and i need 2 tone up. Was expecting to be a little disappointed, as most dance workouts never live up 2 expectations. This one, however is absolutely brilliant and i love doing it. started off twice a week, now i can honestly say i want 2 do it every day..and im starting to tone up already. Would definitely recommend..good tunes 2 dance 2 too :)
    Well worth it-very high impact!

I've danced most of my life and I'm not an unfit person. But wow did this make me sweat! I went for it from start to finish with no breaks and I've never felt so good about a workout before-the woman is very encouraging and the music is very bouncy and fun.
Obviously having only done it twice I haven't noticed a great deal of a difference but I definately will be toned up in a week or so.
I recommend if you haven't got much time, only doing maybe the bums and tums and chill out, or a high impact, because from start to finish it can be very exhausting and you just want it to be over!
    Very good though,
also, try and get it on used and new! I did, and it came in perfect condition for only £3! ;)
    Nothing but praise!

    Reviewer: aims91,
I have to admit, when I did the Pump it Up workout for the first time I was nervous. I've never been fit and I have no co-ordination and very little balance so I was convinced it would be too hard for me. The first time I tried it it was a little tricky. I was out of breath by the time that the warm up section was over and when I moved onto the dance section and satrted on the sideways lunges I couldn't help but shout abuse at the tv. But within 2 weeks of following the routine 5 times a week, I was totally transformed. I not only could I get through the warm up without breaking a sweat, but I had mastered the initial dance section and was even starting to pick up the high energy section. That's amazing considering how unfit I had been!

The routines are really enjoyable, but it's a workout dvd so there are some really tough parts too. The best thing about it is that there are some sexy moves in there. Initially I was looking at the stick-thin girls on screen and thinking 'you're making me feel like the least sexy person ever!' but after a couple of weeks I really got into it; it's a real confidence booster. A few reviews have complained about the dance moves being too complex and there not being enough step-by-step instruction, but I disagree. Admitedly the first time it all seems quite complex and difficult to keep up with, but by the third time I knew the routines quite well and once you've got the hang of it a step-by-step instruction will only slow you down and make it boring. In both the dance section and the high energy section there are some basic salsa moves. These are wonderful as they give you a chance to catch your breath in between all the jumping around.

You can't expect to get into shape without putting some work in, but Pump it Up makes it fun. It's really effective and you start to see the effects really quickly. It's not too hard if you're a total beginner, but even as I get fitter I can still feel the effects of the high energy work out. Be prepared to ache, but it's totally worth it!
    Ok but not for beginners

Nice and energetic and some great tunes but it is very hard to keep up with and not the best choice for someone starting out or with low-fitness.
