Question by Nina W: Interested in starting an herb garden in SE Louisiana. Any suggestions?
I would like to start growing an Italian herb garden in my backyard. (Basil, oregeno, parsley, arugula, etc.) How do I decide which area to plant? Is is best to do this by container gardening or plant directly into the ground. I’ve NEVER done any gardening – just really like to cook with Italian seasonings.

Additionally, I would like to grow tomatoes. Any recomendations on delicious varieties?

Best answer:

Answer by reynwater
All herbs prefer full sun. They do better in the ground than in containers. Oregano is a perennial, basil, parsley, arugula are annuals – save their seeds for next year. Jiffy makes great Mini greenhouses (4″ x 10″) that sit nicely in window sills – preferably south facing – for starting seeds. http://lawn-and-garden.hardwarestore.com/77-494-trays-and-peat-pots/jiffy-peat-pot-strips-631448.aspx see ” Jiffy-7″

Super Fantastic tomatoes are exactly that. http://www.reimerseeds.com/super-fantastic-tomato.aspx

Ayurvedic herb garden, Tamilnadu

In October of 2010 ecoveda travelled to India, this is a short film from part of our visit to a remarkable Ayurvedic garden in the countryside of the state Tamilnadu about an hour’s drive from the City Tiruchirapalli. Talking to the botanist who is owns and maintains this garden it would take four days to fully look around. Not only does the botanist care for all the plants most of which he has planted himself in the sixteen years that the garden had been growing he also teaches students about the importance of Ayurvedic herbs. The site also contains accommodation for students to stay. The Ayurvedic garden is also very important to the local community by providing workshops free of change to the poorer people and teaching them how they can grow their own medicinal plants in their own gardens. Seeds and cutting are also provided free to these people enabling them to get started with their own gardens. After our short visit we all left very inspired by the work this man is going and the service he is providing to the local people. In this video the botanist shows us some of the plants that he has growing further out in the garden the plants we see here are more for educational purposes.

Question by readwritdancgrl: How can I grow the perfect vegetable, fruit, and herb garden when I live in southern California?
I want to grow a great garden with tons of veggies and herbs not to many fruits though. So what do you say can you help me.
I just asked a question in the same categorie maybe you can answer that one to please.

Answer by Cat
Improve your soil. Good soil is the foundation of any good garden.

If you have no previous experience, start small. Plant a few things you like, gain experience, add a few plants each year.

Expect a few failures. We often learn more about gardening through the plants we kill than the plants that do well in spite of us.

Use your county extension or local garden center professionals. Take in samples of plants that are having trouble – pick their brains.

Get to know your gardening neighbors. They are also a wealth of knowledge – they can tell you what does and doesn’t do well in your area, and are often happy to share starts of their plants with you.

Question by kelsey h: How do I start an Herb garden?
Thanks to all the people who helped me with my last question about medical herbs.
But now i want to start a small garden in my room.
My room is small but roomy it has white walls and a window seal large enough to set a small plant on it.
(I watched a video and he said that white walls and windows help…?)
Any ideas on how to start it??
My main questions are:
What type of light i need?
What plants can i get in Kentucky
Where could I find any supplies for it?

Any answer is greatly appreciated:)
Thanks.

Best answer:

Answer by hawktsk8
The white walls will help it keep brighter for the plants which does help. At a local hardware store or a chain store like lowes or home depot, buy a window seal planter that will fit on the seal(a rectangular one, about 6 inches deep and wide), some potting mix, and the herb seeds you’d like to plant( burpee and ferry-morse are highly reputable, american seed company also if you can find them). Basil, cilantryo, chives, all grow super easy from seeds and don’t need much space. Closer to spring you can buy the plants and plant in the container, so if you don’t feel confident in trying seeds just wait. Verigated basil is ornamentally appeasing as well as useful. Oragano is best bought. The seed starting varies, so check the package instructions. A flourescent light about 6in from surface is great for starting seeds, move it higher as they sprout. Also keep soil medium moist while sprouting. Brush seedlings lightly with hand to help grow strong stalks. When started move to the bright window seal and enjoy. If south facing it may be necessary to shade plants towards afternoon to prevent sun scald

1-2-3 Done! – How to Create a Butterfly Herb Garden

One of the pleasures I enjoy about a garden is watching all the wildlife that comes to visit. I am particularly fond of those little acrobats of the sky, butterflies. Creating a butterfly sanctuary is fun and easy. There are two kinds of plants you will need to grow in your butterfly garden; food plants for the caterpillars and nectar plants for the adult butterflies Some herbs have a bloom season, but a lot of herbs bloom continuously throughout the season which makes them especially good in a butterfly garden. Good nectar herbs include oregano, pineapple sage, garlic chives, bee balm, catnip, sage, mint, and thyme. Good host plants are fennel, dill, parsley, and basil. I started with a large terra cotta container and filled it with a good quality soil. I used cinnamon basil, bee balm, parsley and dill from Bonnie Plants. After planting each one in the container, I gave it a good shot of water. Be sure to place your container in a nice sunny location, the herbs and butterflies will be glad you did, plus, you’ll enjoy seeing Mother Nature’s beauty hard at work!

I started an herb garden that I built using a shipping palette and plastic bottles. This is perfect for my balcony garden and would be great for anyone else that has limited space. The principle behind it is that you just have to water the top bottle and the water will drain through to the others below it. Don’t forget to put something to catch the water under the last bottle, like I did, otherwise you’ll wind up with water all over. To start I planted parsley, cilantro and dill seeds. I figured it’s fall time, so these should do well. From top to bottom that’s how I planted them too since parsley needs the most water, cilantro less and dill even less. What do you think of this project?

Question by belle: Why are the chives in my herb garden turning yellow at the tips?
I planted the garden 2 weeks ago in a container on my deck. All the other herbs (thyme, rosemary, basil, oregano, etc.) seem to be doing great. The container is well drained and I water daily. Any help is greatly appreciated.
I went to the local farm today and asked the same question. They said watering is not a problem. It is probably a lack of nitrogen. The only reason I asked was that I thought I would get real feedback

Question by Lizzie Schoon: Will the small red centipedes in my soil kill my herb garden?
I had an indoor herb garden that lived about three weeks. Then, without changing my watering schedule, still getting the same amount of sunshine, everything started getting brown spots on the leaves and dried to a crisp. I just started removing the soil from the planter and there are lots of tiny, red centipedes running around in there. Could they have caused the herb disaster? (I had mint, basil, and thyme)

Best answer:

Answer by TCM
From what I’ve heard from gardeners over the years, centipedes are good for the garden. They apparently eat insects that harm the plants. Maybe you had an infestation of bugs and the centipedes were helping, but not enough. Or you may have had a fungus growing on them.

My herb garden is growing fairly well, for this is my first attempt. I've been told some of these plants will reseed and come back next spring. I thought the labels on this photo would help me remember what they are if that happens!

The peppers, which won't reseed, are in a bit too much shade, though, so next year I'll move them down to the other side.

So far I've used chives in sour cream for potatoes, parsley with butter in red skin potatoes, basil in pesto, and tarragon in soup. Does anyone have any other suggestions for fresh herbs?

Maranatha – Herb Garden Class

Some of the guys in Carey Dorm at Maranatha Baptist Bible College wanted to give visitors to the dorm a good experience and have fun while doing so. The guys convinced the visitors that they have an herb garden class in the dorm with one of the students as the prof. The guys also told the visitors that the video was streamed to the girls dorms and was a distant education class. The visitors loved it.

The easiest way to start an herb garden is to buy herbs from the farmer’s market and to make sure to put the larger herbs towards the top of the beds. Use small herbs from ground cover in an herb garden with help from a sustainable gardener in this free video on herb gardening and plant care.
