Question by loumcneillis: gardening????????????
My girlfriend and I are wanting to plant a small garden (maybe 6×8). We would like to plant some corn, cucumbers, tomatoes, bannana peppers, strawberries and some cantalope. It’s more of just something to do, but we are gonna eat the vegetables. My question is this: Can all these plants grow in the same type of soil? Are there any precautions that need to be taken? Is it too late to plant any of this stuff? We live in lower Michigan. Any helpful hints are appreciated.

Best answer:

Answer by hesperias_witch
First corn needs to be grown in large crops for pollenation, other wise you get funky looking corn. But what I noticed more than anything is you are wanting to put way tooo much in one spot. Strawberries can be planted anywhere and they make a great ground cover. Tomatoes are great, but watch them for Tomato horn worms! YUCK) Cucumbers are viney so they will run and most likely escape your garden as are cantalopes.

Greenhouse 200 Dollar DIY Homemade Solar Gardening towards Self Sufficiency Do It Yourself Organic

Hello all! Here is my homemade greenhouse. Only took me about a day to construct once I gathered all materials. To do this even cheaper, you could skip the wood on the ends, and just cover it in plastic or use pallets that you can many times get for free. You could also forgo the metal frames, and use 1″ PVC that would make it lighter and more mobile. All I have left to install is an internal heat source, which will be a wood fired rocket stove that uses 1/3 the amount of fuel as a typical stove. To preserve the wood I used propylene glycol ( Pink RV Antifreeze that you can drink ) In the video you can also see my worm bins & temporary chicken coop. I hope to grow majority of my own food. It is healthier and cheaper. The food will have no pesticides or preservatives; organic. I can also eat it fresh, meaning the day its picked vs weeks or months old (supermarket). Fresh food has more life energy. This is just another piece in the puzzle on the road to self sufficiency. Thanks for watching and please comment!

Question by Andrea H: How to prepare soil for gardening?
I’m very new to gardening, and I want to start one in my backyard. The problem is, the soil out there is very dry and I’m sure that nothing could grow in it if I tried now. I’m in zone 7b and I don’t know if I should replace the soil altogether or just add a bunch of fertilizer and compost. Any ideas?
Also, what I want to grow is small berries, tomatoes and other edibles.

Question by : What would be the best time to start gardening?
My fiance and I are buying a house, we are just waiting to find out out the closing date right now, but we have a huge yard and i’m wanting to start a garden.I haven’t had much experience with gardening, so I would need some good hardy plants or flowers. We live in Tahlequah, OK which is about an hr or so southeast of Tulsa OK, so I think zone 6? The house also faces the south I believe if that helps any

thanks :)

Answer by Texperson
Wait till early spring. Then all your local nurseries will get in fresh 2012 plant, tree and grass items. Anything you’d buy now would be pretty much left over things and the cold will prevent them from properly rooting.

If you have flower beds or know where you want to establish them, you can put in metal or stone demarcation lines and fill the beds with compost and some organic fertilizer, till it all in and let it sit till spring. Then you will have good beds ready to go.

We grow a lot of our own veggies. This year, to cut back on water use, we decided to mulch heavily with pea straw. Now we have a great crop of peas coming up that we didn’t plant LOL. There’s nothing better than fresh baby peas straight from the pod.

Different herbs are harvested differently. Most are harvested as young tender leaves. Then either used fresh or dried and mashed and stored.
Others the seeds are dried and used some stems are dried and ground and stored.
Some roots are chopped and dried or used fresh.
So it depends on what type of herb. Medicine, culinary. etc.
I hope this answers your question.

Question by : What kind of lighting should I use for an indoor herb garden?
This summer I’m planning to grow herbs for the first time. I’m starting with just a few simple cooking herbs, and I want to grow them in my room but I’m concerned about lighting. They’ll be next to the window so they’ll get plenty of fresh air, but my room isn’t facing in the right direction for a lot of sunlight to filter in. Would it be a good idea to get a timed grow light for them? And if so, what type of light should I get, and what times during the day should it be on?
