I bought two of these brushes for myself and my husband. I had used a Braun in the past that had lasted a fabulous 6 years before it's battery died. I then bought a Phillips Sonicare which broke within two years -(The on/off button broke ). So I went back to Braun and did a quick test on the Braun site to see which toothbrush best suited me. This was the one and I'm so happy I bought it for myself and one for hubby dearest. My teeth are less stained and brighter. The dentist thinks so too and even asked me which electric toothbrush I use.
We both agree that neither of us previously brushed for as long as the smartguide reccommends. The fact that the smartguide focuses you onto a particular quadrant to brush and for how long helps maintain an even brushing technique. And if you happen to be brushing too hard the smartguide brings up a warning triangle which is helpul for those of us taking out our frustrations on our teeth.
White teeth + no more receeding gums + a happy dentist = a confident smile |

I got this for my birthday to replace my philips sonicare (which was still working fine) as my mother and sister both said this was the best toothbrush they had ever used. I never thought my teeth could feel this clean.... my teeth are so much whiter too - i've had comments from my close friends who thought i'd had them whitened! It's a little different to the sonicare in size so took a little while to get used to but it's fine now. The battery life is pretty good. It lasts about 10 days with 2 x 2- 3min per day ( i tend to use the polish setting after the 2 mins are up)
It's worth noting that once it starts flashing to charge it up - do it right away - my sonicare i'd get 2 -3 more goes out of it but this one stopped halfway through my brushing!
It comes with a plastic carry case too so you can take it away on holidays etc.
I'm very very happy with it. |

On the face of it, the Triumph 5000 seems almost identical to its predecessor, the 9900. You get virtually the same brush handle, the same SmartGuide unit, the same travel case and a similar housing unit, although now you also get a Sensitive brush head in addition to the FlossAction and ProBright ones. In usage terms, the 5000 adds an extra brushing mode to the 9900's four - on top of the 'Daily Clean', 'Massage', 'Sensitive' and 'Polish' settings, there's now a 'Deep Clean' mode for a more intensive clean. The LCD in the handle has also changed slightly so it now displays more information, but in reality you're hardly going to be looking at it while you're cleaning your teeth.
As with the 9900, the 5000's handle communicates with the SmartGuide unit to relay information on which of the brushing actions you're using, how much time has elapsed since you started and which area of your mouth you should be cleaning. To be honest I've never been a fan of the SmartGuide, seeing it as more of a gimmick than a truly useful addition. It doesn't really give any information that the brush handle doesn't - although it perhaps delivers it in a more user-friendly way - so I find myself ignoring it and concentrating on the handle instead. The handle vibrates at set times as you're brushing to indicate when you should be moving on to a different part of your mouth and I find this less of a distraction than constantly watching the SmartGuide.
In terms of battery life, from a single 12-hour charge I get something like just under an hour of use, or the equivalent of 12 days of twice-daily cleaning (for some reason I always clean for 2 minutes 30 seconds rather than 2 minutes.) I've seen a few comments about the Oral-B rechargeable batteries and how some people find they don't last long before needing to be replaced. In my experience, as long as you discharge the battery fully and don't charge it while it still has some juice left in it, you should get at least a few years' worth of use out of it. At the very least, only charging it only when it gives a 'low battery' warning should help enormously.
One thing I do like about the Triumph is that the whole thing (handle and brush) is waterproof, so to clean it you just run it under a tap and wipe it dry on a towel. One thing I don't like so much is that the weightiness and ungainly feeling of the 9900 remains, making the 5000's handle easy to drop if you're not feeling at your best first thing in the morning. The slightly awkward positioning of the buttons remains as well, so you could find yourself pressing one by accident - and thereby changing the cleaning mode - in the middle of a brush.
I've used Oral-B electric toothbrushes for some years now, and the 5000 seems like a good step-up from one of their more conventional offerings. It looks good (a necessity in today's modern homes), cleans well and comes with some useful additions, including a nice-length power cord. However, I would suggest that the SmartGuide isn't the supremely necessary gadget it might at first seem, so if you're looking at Oral-B brushes then I would recommend that you at least give consideration to one of their other models. |

| i've been looking around a few places for a brilliant toothbrush and was recommended this one by my dentist. I am not disappointed. the battery lasts for around 10 days (of course twice a day brushing) however the smartguide doesn't seem to last long with keeping the time, when its not in use acts as a clock, maybe i am doing it wrong which is the reason i gave it four not five stars. back to the brushing - i no longer need to floss as the adaptable heads do their job very well. you will not be able to find a better price anywhere else - most definatly worth every penny. |
