Photoshop elements 8 for home users

Review Date: March 15, 2010

Photoshop elements 8 is a very good image editing package for the home user. I am still playing with all the options at the moment and keep discovering new features.
Fantastic & a must for photographers,

I tried lots of the other makes for long time which were no good or to difficult to use, photoshop 8 isn't easy to use either but there is so much help out there on the web that you can learn different things as you go along. I would recommend that you buy this if you are serious about photography.
Early Days

This is still 'Early Days' in using this programme but so far so good I have done a couple of SLIDE SHOWS to date which involved editing the images first and was very pleased with the results - lookslike being another hit thanks in part to the Visually Teach Yourself book I also bought.
It's good if it works...

I upgraded to this as I had previously had version 6. That had worked well for some time then started to crash regularly. I hoped this would be different. Sure enough, it worked perfectly for about four weeks then started crashing within minutes of starting. There would be no particular reason, selecting a menu was enough to cause the crash sometimes.
If it happens, don't waste your time going to Adobe. Once they have your money they don't care and you simply will not get any response from them no matter how hard you try. Submitting the crash reports with your email address so they can reply and advise meets with the same lack of response. If you want to try yourself by searching the internet you will have plenty of material. There are hundreds upon hundreds of very similar complaints all with the common theme that the computer crashes but Adobe will not explain why or issue any fix. In my case it seems there may be a problem with Elements and my Nvidia graphics card, but this is not confirmed by Adobe.
I'm really disappointed as it's a good package when it works. At present though, it's a pile of junk on my computer and there seems little chance Adobe, who obviously have nothing but contempt for customers who have paid up, will make any move to explain the cause or issue a fix.
Aggressive Product Activation - Watch Out!

I bought the combined Photoshop/Premiere Elements bundle when my two home PCs were using Windows Vista (32-bit). Since purchase I have replaced both PCs; first with Vista (32-bit for one and 64-bit for the other) and then re-built both of them with Windows 7 Ultimate. My problem is that I made the mistake of not deauthorising the software on each PC before re-building the OSs. I am now locked out of the software and there is no way to nullify my old activations - I need to pay Adobe more money (forget it, I now use GIMP instead).

With regard to the software:

Premiere elements adds drivers and unwanted components (for effects) all over the place, without asking first. I've uninstalled this since I only want to capture DV or MP4 video and edit (no fades, dissolves etc).

Photoshop elements provides an editor (which I want) and a photo organiser (which I don't). The software seems pretty reliable and has good colour control and correction tools. There are also some gimmicky filters and I didn't see any lossless JPG tools. Overall, this would be pretty good for home use if it hadn't locked me out!
